What is a PNR status?

'Passenger Name Reecord' in short is called PNR. It is a record of journey details of a passenger, or a group of passengers which is stored in the database of Indian Railways Computer Reservation System(IR-CRS).

Whenever a Indian Railways ticket is booked through reservation, all the details of the passengers are stored in a centralized database of reservaton system. These details are linked with a unique ten digit number called PNR and it is printed on the ticket as well.

This record stores passsengers personal information such as name, gender, age, etc. As well as booking status and current ticket status for easy tracking and checking of train status.

Since every train has a limited number of seats, sometimes passengers may not get confirmed ticket reservation. Such unconfirmed reservaton tickets are put in waitlist. Status of such waitlist tickets changes when there is a availablity of seats due to cancellations. This current reservation status is known as PNR status.

Different Types of Indian Railways Trains and PNR Generation

First ever Indian Railways train ran between Mumbai to Thane in the year 1853. Mumbai and Thane districts are located in the west coast of the Maharashtra state. Developemnt in the rail technology has led to gradual improvements in the Indian Railways train services. Today thousands of express and local passenger trains run on daily basis all over India. Indian Railways has categorized all the trians based on their average speed, number of stops on their routes.

Metro Trains: These types of trains are moderately fast and equipped with latest technologies. They specifically designed city commute. Currently these trains are running in few metro cities of India like Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. Due high demand for such trains in cities, government has planned to introduce metro trians in other major cities of India. Because one cannot reserve a seat on metro trains it does nto generate PNR.

Suburban Locals: These types of trains have been for long time in India. Just like metro trains these also run only in few metro cities namely Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. For these trains reservation is not possible so no PNR is generated. These local are further devided into Slow Local(halts on every station) and Fast Local(halts only on main stations).

Passenger Trains: These trians can also be devided into slow passenger and fast passenger trains. These trains run between small distanced cities. For these trains also seat reservation and not possible hence not PNR is generated.

Express & Super-fast Express: These trains run for long distances, They are relatively faster than the above mentioned ones. Train tickets can be reserved on these trains hence, unique PNR is genrated. PNR status checking facility is also made available for non-reserved tickets also.

Shatabdi and Janshatabdi Express Trains: These trians are high speed trians and are used to connect moderate distanced important stations. They trains do not have sleeper coach facility. The only thing that differentiates between Shatabdi and Janshatabdi trains is that Janshatabdi trains have both AC and non AC coaches while Shatabdi trains are fully air-conditioned. Since seats can be booked PNR is generated and can be used to check status.

Garib Rath: These types of trains have AC 3 tier coaches. Ticket price is relatively lower than the other air conditioned trains. You can check PNR status on these trains.

Rajdhani Express: These trains connect major cities of india. These are fully air conditioned and high priority trians generally run on their scheduled time. These trians have very few stops on their route. Seat reservation and PNR check facility is available on these trians.

Duranto Express: This service is the latest initiative started by Indian Railway. These trians strictly run from source to destination and do not stop for any station on route.

What Are The Types of Waitlist Tickets & Their Confirmation Priority

There are some predefined rules that govern the allotment of different types of wailtlist quota on unconfirmed tickets. General Waiting List (GNWL): GNWL ticket are considered on highest priority and has most likelihood of getting confirmation. If you are starting joruney station is close to the trian source station and your end journey station is close to train destination station then chances of getting on GNWL is high.

Tatkal Waiting List(CKWL): Since priority level of CKWL is lower than GNWL, chances of CKWL ticket getting confirmed are also low.

Indian Railways has defined some other Waiting List quotas in long journey trains apart from above mentioned ones. Such as, Remote Location Waiting List (RLWL), Request Waiting List (RQWL), Pooled Quota Waiting List (PQWL), Remote Location General Waiting List (RLGN) and Roadside Station Waiting List (RSWL). Chances for these types of waitlist tickets getting confirmation are very less.
